New choekhang to house dzongkhag administration

«His Holiness consecrates the choekhang
His Holiness the Je Khenpo, yesterday consecrated Wangduephodrang’s newly built choekhang (ritual hall), located above Bajo town, which will be temporarily used to house the dzongkhag administration.

After the Wangdue dzong burnt down in June this year, the dzongkhag administration offices have been operating out of the Bhutan Power corporation’s building in Bajo town.

“We’re preparing to shift by the end of this month,” Wangdue dzongrab, Pema, said. The choekhang is spacious to accommodate the administration’s 77 employees, who will operate from there until the rebuilding of the Wangdue dzong is complete.

Construction of the choekhang was initiated by the dzongkhag’s Choenthen tshogpa, with a fund of more than Nu 2M.  After the dzong was lost to the fire, the Wangdue dzong conservation project funded more than Nu 8M.  The Punatsangchu projects also helped with construction materials and CGI sheets.

The one-storied choekhang, which is 57m long and 23m wide, has the capacity to accommodate more than 5,000 people, according to the dzongrab, Pema.

Religious activities, like moenlam choenmo and tsokhor (offerings), will be held in the choekhang.  To the left end of the choekhang is a three-storied altar like Zangdopelri.  It has a Guru statue facing the ruined Wangdue dzong.
