Not all 23 a day are new cases

All 23 diabetic cases that the Thimphu sees a day is not new but inclusive of old cases that come for follow up, medical specialist Dr Tashi Wangdi said.

Kuensel had earlier reported that about 23 new cases are diagnosed a day at the hospital.

Dr Tashi Wangdi said there are about 2,700 patients registered as diabetic and who visit the hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The average number of patients on these two days is about 80.

“That does not mean all new cases but old ones on follow ups and some new ones,” he said. “But the point is that we know there are over 8,000 adult diabetics out there in Thimphu; so where are the rest?”
According to Dr Tashi Wangdi, the remaining is lying undetected because of the largely symptomless state in early stages of diabetes.  The 2007 survey had found about 8,000 Thimphu residents to be diabetic.
