National Council: Reading books on politics, voting rights and studying legal and economic systems is how National Council aspirant from Tsirang is preparing himself, besides frequently visiting people of his constituency.

A 2011 Master of Business Administration graduate from Indian Academy in Banglore and a business strategist for The Bhutanese newspaper, 27-year-old Novin Darlami from Zamlingzor village under Gosarling gewog in Tsirang said he wished to provide that choice for the people in his constituency.

In the meantime, while campaign dates have yet to be fixed, Novin Darlami said he was voluntarily teaching students of various private schools on current affairs, political environment, recent developments in the country and the 10th plan until September.

Although Novin Darlami comes from a business family and lived in Wangduephodrang most of his life, he said he still had strong attachment with people of Tsirang.

“I’ve been living in Tsirang after resigning and with the help of my parents and relatives, I’m getting to know the people there and I’m quite comfortable now,” he said. “Their main issues, among many, are human-wildlife conflict, youth unemployment, access to market, which I’d like to help people with.”

Besides his own interest to participate in the next council elections, he said it was the people of his constituency, who emboldened him to contest in the next election about which his parents and brother were supportive.

While he chose not to comment on how the serving council members fared so far, his vision, Novin Darlami said was to put people first and work for their interest.

“My mission is to bolster the council’s ability to scrutinise and review bills critically to the extent that the office will encourage and facilitate meaningful legislation,” he said. “They should, after all, benefit the people of the nation.”

Novin Darlami said his dream was to help Parliament members through developmental activities in the district and to make Tsirang a green district by promoting green and organic agricultural marketing in the country.

Speaking about the social service delivery system in the country, he said it had to be a holistic approach, in which all other sectors of private, corporate, non-government and individuals had to play their own parts as it is a collective effort.

“I’d focus more on the youth population and the main problem with youth is that they’re leaving Tsirang to dwell in bigger cities,” he said.

About the possibility of serving council members contesting in the upcoming elections, Novin Darlami said they should be.

“The more the better, it’ll give a good sense of competition and the public will have  many to choose from,” he said, adding he was confident the public would choose the right candidate.

“I believe I have the potential,” he said. “I’m ready to enter the battle field with the moral support of my family.”
